2 nd November - 24 th November 2024
WEN-HSI Harman (1984–) was born in Taipei, Taiwan, and is a ceramic artist currently living and working in Somerset, United Kingdom. She is a member of the UNESCO International Academy of Ceramics (IAC) and the Royal Society of Sculptors (MRSS).
Wen-Hsi completed her BA in Chinese Literature at Soochow University, Taipei, Taiwan (2006). She then pursued her first MA in the History of Chinese Art at National Taiwan Normal University, Taipei, Taiwan (2008), followed by a second MA in Contemporary Crafts (Ceramics) at the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham, UK (2010). She was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Ceramics at Bath Spa University, UK (2018).
Her ceramic practice investigates cross-cultural identity through clay. Living away from her homeland has given her a 'clearer 'perspective on the culture in which she grew up. These experiences have provided a platform from which she addresses cross-cultural questions.
In this exhibition, she presents some of her porcelain artwork inspired by Taiwan's national animal, the Formosan Black Bear, which once inhabited forests throughout Taiwan. Currently, they are found at altitudes from 1,000 to 3,500 meters and tend to move to lower altitudes during winter or the rainy season. Formosan Black Bears have a distinctive V-shaped white marking on their chest and are able to stand upright and walk on their hind legs. She also presents handmade porcelain pieces called "chicken feet" to highlight elements of Taiwanese food culture and cultural identity.
