Over the past 30 days, I participated in an artist residency in Istanbul, Turkey. I wanted to try something new and step away from my daily routine by exploring a different country and immersing myself in a new culture. During my time there, I observed Turkish cultural identity and found inspiration in Turkish architecture, street art, ceramics, tea, coffee, and the philosophy and religion that shape daily life. @wenhsiharmanporcelainart @arthereistanbul @martinharmanart
I created nine watercolor paintings during my residency and collaborated with a local framing craftsman @sevensanatgalerisi in Istanbul to design unique paper frames for each piece. Every painting is hand-painted and one-off . I decided to move my work from the inside to the outside into the real world (take photos ), because much of my inspiration came from observing Turkish cultural identity through colours, tea, coffee and emotions. I challenged myself to travel to a new country for this residency, allowing myself to step out my daily routine and create something different from my usual practice. This experience pushed me to embrace discomfort, as a way to discover new ideas. I am deeply grateful to the opportunity to have the freedom to continue my artistic practice, regardless of how others may judge my watercolours or questions my personal identity. Thank you, Istanbul- whether the experience were good or bad, they have become an essential part of my journey. As and artist, this process is my way of life and philosophy.
