Brothers of Bear
Handmade porcelain sculpture with a ready-made wooden stand from my homeland, Taiwan.
28 x 22 x 10 cm, 2023. Made in the UK.
This piece is inspired by the Taiwanese black bear, particularly the V-shaped white mark on its neck. Through this work, I want to express the bond between two brothers—one is outgoing, the other is quiet and a good listener.
Someone once asked me if I would sell them separately, even offering to pay more money. However, I chose not to separate them. To me, they belong together as one sculpture. I want them to share their thoughts, do things together, and have fun as a pair.
Some might think I’m being silly—why not sell one and earn some money to support myself? But sometimes, I prefer to stay true to my artistic vision, even if it seems like an impractical decision to others. I believe that one day, someone will understand my thoughts and appreciate my decision not to separate them.
You can display them indoors or outdoors if you like. I placed them alongside my grape hyacinths, allowing them to experience a hint of spring—even in the cold temperatures. 😆
